On Sunday 3rd July we attended the YMCA Plymouth ‘Community with Additional Needs Day Out’ event.
This was a fun event in which all were welcomed. It was filled with inclusive activities, entertainment, refreshments and live music from the Queens Dock Ukulele Players. The day brought together a range of groups and organisations through the range of activities in a safe and supportive environment.
The Independent Living Advisor had an active role in the planning of the event. We were able to arrange for representatives from organisations who to assist people to remain living well within the community to attend – these included the local Police representatives, dance tutors and a disability awareness group. These organisations raised awareness of opportunities available for people with additional needs.
We also had a stand there. In our guise of Telecare equipment providers, we were able to offer advice on Telecare packages and explain how it can support carers in keeping their loved ones safe and independent. Our leaflets on diet and associated illnesses were well received – leaflets relating to obesity, poor bone health and diabetes were the main points of discussion. There was a demand for us to offer advice in these areas.
Much fun was had by all and we can’t wait until next year’s event. Maybe you will join us
